3. Light

You were something else, and Toris could tell just by looking at you.

Things at school hadn’t been the best. They had gotten a bit better since the Soviet Club had disbanded, but not by much. It wasn’t like things were necessarily bad. They were just… not good. Gray, if you will – days became rather bland and uninteresting (still preferable to the Soviet Club though). He was becoming a bit distant with everyone – even Feliks had trouble bringing him out of his funk. Not even the thought of being with Natalya every now and again was very invigorating. People began to worry when his grades began to slip a bit. That was when a teacher recommended he get a tutor for his algebra class. That was where you came in.

He had been sitting in a classroom after school waiting for you. He was tapping his pencil on his chin impatiently. You were five minutes late, and while he had nothing better to do, if he was going to just sit around, he would have preferred doing so in the comfort of his own home.

“Sorry, I’m late,” you said as you entered the room with bright smile. You were wearing a cute denim skirt and a bright yellow shirt that was reminiscent of the sun. The only thing brighter than your shirt was your smile, infectious if only a little. It brought a small smile to his face – the most happiness he had shown in a while. “So I hear you’re having trouble in algebra?”

“Uh, yeah, that’s right.” Even your voice was like the chirp of birds.
The two of you worked for a while, and Toris had to admit that you were really smart. And pretty. And your eyes were so… so… bright – as if you were that light he was having trouble finding nowadays. He wanted you to stay with him.

“I think that’s enough for today. Don’t you?” you asked with that bright smile that in the short time the two of you had been together, Toris had quite completely fallen for.

“I guess,” he said. You had to admit yourself that Toris was a very nice person, and he may have been the only person in the school who hadn’t flirted with you on sight.

“How are liking the school so far, ______?” he had heard about you through the grapevine but had never had the pleasure of meeting you until now.

“It’s nice. Everyone here is really friendly too. It made for a very interesting first day,” you said with a bit of a blush as you remembered just how “friendly” the boys at this school could be.

“That’s great. Erm, I was wondering, you know, if it’s okay with you…uh…,”he stammered out.

“Yes?” you asked looking up at him from beneath your lashes. It was too much for him. You were too cute.

“W-would you,” he started but couldn’t say just what it was he wanted, “Would you tutor me again tomorrow afternoon? I-I have some other questions,” he mumbled.

“Sure, I’d be happy to,” you said with a smile as you grabbed your things. Toris watched with a slightly heavy heart as you left. He had wanted to ask you out but lost his confidence at the sight of your cute expression. You were way out of his league.

~~~
He looked for you at lunch the next day – thinking about the time he’d get to spend with you later. Raivis and Eduard noticed his odd behavior but brushed it off when they saw how longingly he was staring at you.
“She’s cute to you, да?” Ivan asked when he too noticed the sad puppy look on Toris’s face. Toris could only nod. You were so much more than cute to him though. You were the very embodiment of what sunshine on a cloudy day was supposed to look like.
“She is pretty,” Irina mentioned. “Are you going to ask her out?” Toris shrank back a little, his old shame from the previous day returning. A blush rose to his face.
“M-maybe,” he stuttered, “I don’t know.”
“I think you should,” Irina continued, “Don’t you think so Natalya?”
“I don’t care about her so long as she stays away from big brother,” she said while latching onto Ivan’s arm – much to his chagrin.
~~~
Later that same day, Toris had more trouble focusing due to having most of his attention on you. Thankfully, he was also able to play it off. You were so sweet and encouraging. He wanted to lean over and kiss you the entire time, but he wasn’t brave enough. Just as well, he had a feeling you wouldn’t quite approve either.

“______, I…,” he trailed off. It was once again time for you to go, and he was losing his courage again.

“Yes, Toris?” you asked.

“I want to thank you,” he answered, mentally kicking himself for backing out of this again.

“You’re welcome, Toris,” you said with one of your bright, breathtaking smiles before you left out of the door again. Toris sighed and sat back down and put his head on a desk. Then he had an idea. Taking out a blank sheet of paper, he began to write. Then he crumpled it up and threw it away before trying again. This went on for about an hour before he finally decided what he had written was worthy of what he had in mind.

~~~
The next day you were chatting idly with Elizaveta and Lily, and when you opened your locker, a letter fell out.
My beloved ______,
I’ve been admiring you from afar. You’re the light I’ve been searching for all this time. You’re the ray of sunshine that gives me hope. I love the way your voice sounds, your laugh like the soft sound of bells. Your smile is enough to brighten even the darkest of places. Your eyes sparkle like diamonds glittering in the sun. And your voice is enough to make even angels with the sweetest of voices look to you with envy in their eyes. I was too afraid to approach you, so I hope you’ll accept my letter until the day I find the courage to pursue such a majestic and exotic beauty such as yourself.
Love,
Your Secret Admirer
You blushed madly. Elizaveta and Lily had been reading it over your shoulders, and giggled and gossiped about it.
“I think it’s sweet,” Lily said with a bright look in her eyes.
“It’s sweet, but I think he should’ve had the guts to approach you directly,” Elizaveta said. That was a pretty typical answer considering how straight forward she usually was about things.
“I think it’s beautiful,” you said with a light blush and a dreamy look on your face.
Down the hall Toris let out a sigh of relief at your words. He would approach you directly. Someday….
